Cats are always up to something at night. They may be bouncing around the room or pestering you for breakfast a little too early. This has all of us cat owners wondering: are cats nocturnal animals?

It’s a curious and natural thing to wonder, as our cats’ schedules do not seem to ever line up with ours. Let’s discover just what makes our cats stay up when we are sound asleep.

There is a general assumption that because cats are often up during the night, they’re nocturnal. Cats are actually not nocturnal.

Domesticated cats are crepuscular creatures. Don’t be worried if you’ve never heard this term before – it’s a unique one that I’ll explain in greater detail.

Crepuscular animals are those who are naturally inclined to be active at dusk and dawn. For cats specifically, these are the best times to hunt, something cats got from their ancestors.

Our pretty kitties come from wild cats, more specifically African and European wild cats. Most of these cats lived in desert-like areas where it was typically way too hot to hunt during daylight hours. So, they adapted their hunting schedule to the coolest hours of the day – the early morning and the early evening. Their eye structure has something to do with this, too. Our domesticated feline friends have slits, while most big cats have round pupils. (More on that here!)

So, When Do Cats Sleep Then?

Cats sleep really whenever they want. Because our house cats are domesticated, they often do sleep at night, sometimes in bed with us. But, don’t be surprised if your cat wakes up at the crack of dawn with tons of energy.

What is really fascinating about cats is how they utilize their sleep strategically. We typically have this misconception that cats are lazy and would sleep all day long if they could. Yet, a cat’s sleeping schedule has a purpose, and it’s very different than our human understanding of sleep.

When cats sleep, no matter how cozy they look, they aren’t in a deep, unshakable slumber. Because cats are innately hunters, they’re always attentive and quick to respond to any sound or other stimulus. This goes too even if they’re taking a nap. As you know, this is a little different than us humans, who usually feel very groggy when suddenly disturbed out of a REM cycle.

How Much Do Cats Sleep?

Adult cats sleep for about 15 hours a day. If it’s a kitten, then the average goes up to 20 hours. This may sound like a lot, especially since we humans barely even get 8 hours on a good day.

Cats are very smart about their sleep schedule. These hours of sleep help keep your cat alert and active. Every nap they get in is a way for them to store up energy for their next big ‘hunt.’ By hunt, we mean playing with a toy, observing things out the window, or maybe just driving you crazy.

All of these unique cat behaviors remind us of our cat’s ancient hunter ancestors. These ancestors had to be wise about their energy to ensure that they always had a meal. Although our house cats are pampered and receive food without having to do much, cats still carry on many ancestral traits.

Will Letting My Cat Sleep with Me Disrupt my Sleep Schedule?

Yes and no. It really all depends on your cat. Some cats are always willing to cozy up with their owners at night, while some cats could really care less.

If your cat wants to sleep with you, you should let them. There are many benefits to allowing your cat to sleep with you at night. First, they provide a ton of warmth and love. This is particularly true if you’re that special person for your cat. Some studies even show that sleeping with your cat can ease your psyche and make you feel happier.

Allowing your cat to sleep next to you is also great for protection. As we learned, cats are alert even when sleeping. Your cat may be able to let you know about danger while you’re the most vulnerable.

Of course, cats can also be a little annoying to sleep with too. Since cats are crepuscular, they may wake you up at ungodly hours. If your cat is more on the vocal side, then perhaps cuddling with your cat at night shouldn’t be a regular thing.

This requires teaching both your child and cat how to engage with each other. Before making the first introduction, it is always a great idea to have a little chat with your child. Preparing them for meeting your cat is very crucial. A child’s shock and surprised reaction to first seeing your cat might make it feel very uncomfortable. Remember, cats don’t love change. Their reaction could be timid or aggressive, like running away or hissing.

Chatting with your kid before the introduction is also a great way to explain any of these tips beforehand. That way, when your cat and kid first meet, your child will have a preliminary understanding of how to approach your new feline friend.

If you have a baby or toddler who isn’t old enough to have a conversation, it’s best to give your cat a little intro beforehand. Start to place some of your baby’s things around so that your cat becomes familiar with things associated with your child, like their scent, toys, and clothes.

Emphasize distance

When you are finally ready to introduce your cat and child, remember to host their little meeting in a place with lots of space. Don’t leave them alone – you should be there when they first meet.

Cats do not like to feel trapped. So, the first introduction must be in a space where a cat has an easy way out. Always make sure to leave a door open if you’re not in an open space like a kitchen. This will make your cat will feel calmer. If your cat does run, remind your child to let them go.

In terms of distance for your child, make sure to remind your child to greet your cat from a distance and allow your cat to come to them. This will ensure that your cat is 100 percent comfortable with the situation. Quickly moving towards your cat may make your cat very scared.

It is important to explain to your child how to safely hold a cat and to notice the signs when a cat doesn’t want to be held.

Explain to your child that cats need to be handled gently. You shouldn’t grab them like a lion grabs her cub from the neck. You should hold a cat’s chest with one hand, and its hind side with another. This is how your cat will feel secure and safe.

The first time your child tries to hold your cat, be there to help them. It will be a great learning experience. Most likely, your cat will want to be let down. This is a significant learning experience, as you can show your child the cues that your cat is uncomfortable before your cat reacts aggressively.

Remind not to tease

Kids and cats love to play, but in their own ways. Oftentimes, what your kid thinks is just playing is actually teasing. This makes cats severely agitated.

From the moment your child meets your cat, prioritize making clear distinctions between playing and teasing. Remind your child that a cat is an animal with different reactions than people. They may not respond well to playing a game of, let’s say, tag. But, they might love to play with a string or even a game of fetch!

In South America, there is a native wild cat that lurks among the mountains, feasting on chinchillas and living in conditions humans would find inhabitable. Its name is the Andean cat.

Now, don’t get us wrong – this cat isn’t as dry and scary as its habitat may sound. The Andean cat is actually a fascinating and friendly feline, who deserves our attention, especially since it is one of the most endangered cats on earth.

Let’s learn all there is to know about the Andean cat!

Andean cats live only in 4 different countries

You won’t find the Andean cat just anywhere in the world. This cat lives only in South American, in four specific countries: Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. There is a reasoning for this.

Andean cats thrive in high-elevation and extremely rugged terrains. This is one of the various reasons these cats have been very difficult to study. It is almost too life-threatening to study these cats in their natural habitat. It isn’t very easy to navigate for humans, particularly at night. Andean cats are nocturnal, active mostly in darkness.

This cat has gorgeous looks

Andean cats have a very unique look. Their fur coat can be silver or ash grey, with large orange-brown stripes or spots all over their small body. These colors help Andean cats stay camouflaged in the dry rocky, and shrubby terrain of the mountains. Plus, their thick coats help them stay warm as they hunt at night when temperatures can be seriously cold.

The Andean cat is also not a very large kitty either. It weighs around just 12 pounds, just a few pounds larger than your average housecat. But, its long, beautiful tail, graced with black rings, adds length to this beautiful wild cat’s body.

The Andean cat loves altitude

These South American cats can thrive way up in the air. We’re talking 3000 to 4000 meters up, in the dry grasslands of the Andes mountain chain. These areas are only habitable by certain animals. This is why these cats evolved a very specialized diet of mountain chinchillas, known as mountain vizcachas, as well as reptiles, rabbits, and other small animals that roam in the area.

Actually, locals have their own name for the Andean cat. ‘Huana titi’ is this cat’s original name, meaning ‘the cat from dry places.’ This is a simple and concise way of describing the arid habitat that the Andean cat calls home.

Don’t forget that Andean cats can be queens

Yes, you heard that right. Like oncillas, Andean female cats are known as queens whereas male Andean cats are called tomcats.

There are very few Andean cats left

The Andean cat is the most threatened cat in all of the Americas, making it one of the top 5 most endangered cats in the world. There is an estimated 1400 Andean cats left in the world. This is due to the saddening consequences of habitat shrinkage. Andean cats often find themselves entering farms and eating livestock, causing communities to hunt and kill Andean cats. Fortunately, there are conservationists challenging this terrible reality. The WCN (Wildlife Conservation Network) and the Andean Cat Alliance (Gato Andino) have special projects dedicated to saving the Andean cat, with structured, on-site solutions, led by skilled locals.

The Andean cat’s shrinking habitat has led these cats to venture to more urban settings. In fact, there were recent reports in Chile of these cats lurking around the outskirts of its capital, Santiago.

At the edge of the city lays the Parque Mahuida nature reserve, a terrain much more approachable than the rough terrain Andean cats are used to. What calls these majestic cats down from their usual high-altitude habitat is survival. Mountain vizcachas, a type of chinchilla native to the area, roam in this reserve. They’re also a core part of the Andean cat’s diet.

It is extremely sad that such an elusive cat like the Andean must venture close to city limits for food. Since July, locals have reported 3 adult Andean cats that routinely pass through the area. Who knows how many more will come!

The Andean cat is a special kitty that sadly faces more hardship than it should. Deep in the rainforests of Asia lives the clouded leopard, a gorgeous wild cat with many talents. Sadly, this cat is very endangered. Let’s learn a little more about this incredible cat and how we can help protect it from extinction!

These cats are their very own species

Many often think that because there’s ‘leopard’ in ‘clouded leopard’ that this cat is just a type of leopard. Not true at all. The clouded leopard is its very own species. Its scientific name is neofelis nebulosa, whereas the leopard is the panthera pardus. They both come from the same family and subfamily, but have entirely different genus.

The clouded leopards live only in Asia

These magnificent cats only live in one continent: Asia. Not just any part of Asia, but in Southeast Asia and across the majestic Himalayan mountains. To get specific, you can find clouded leopards in Bhutan, Nepal, Burma, northeast India, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, and Bangladesh. You can also find clouded leopards in southern China.

The big cats call rainforests home. They can be dry or tropical, although clouded leopards thrive more the latter. What is incredible is that these cats can thrive at some amazing altitudes, even up to 9000 feet.

The name is in the fur

You could say that the clouded leopard gets its name from living in places that seem far up in the clouds. But, this cat’s name actually comes from its fur. The clouded leopard has ellipse-like markings on its coat, that remind many of clouds.

Boy, these cats can climb

You can’t live in a rainforest without knowing how to climb. Clouded leopards are expert climbers. You’d think that a large cat would struggle climbing. But, the thing is – clouded leopards aren’t as big as you think. Its body is smaller than most big cats, with males weighing up to 50 pounds and females up to 35 pounds. This makes it a little easier to climb.

Clouded leopards climb in ways you wouldn’t imagine. These cats can hang from trees with their paws and even climb down trees headfirst. It is only like they can defy gravity!

An interesting fact about clouded leopards is that they physically cannot roar or even purr. This is because these cats do not have the hyoid apparatus in the larynx that causes purring.

Clouded leopards aren’t silent though. They can make a range of other noises, like hissing, growling, or chuffing.

But, its jaws are super powerful

What helps make clouded leopards such great hunters is their jaws. Their mouths can open 100 degrees. Also, these cats have the largest canine teeth than any other cat, when comparing these teeth to body size. This helps clouded leopards successfully hunt deer, wild boars, slow loris, gibbons, and smaller animals, like birds.

Male and female clouded leopards don’t always get along

The clouded leopard may not be the largest feline, but these cats are pretty aggressive amongst each other. Particularly, males and females may get quite catty when searching for a mate.

Frequently, things become more than just catty. They can become lethally confrontational. Males often harm and kill females during this process. This explains why you may not see many clouded leopards in captivity. It is a dangerous task to breed males and females, which could potentially result in staff being injured, too.

Clouded leopards are a highly threatened species. One of the main reasons for this is that the rainforests that clouded leopards call home are shrinking. According to the WWF, the clouded leopard’s habitat is decreasing at a shocking rate of 10% per year since 1997. This means, without conservation efforts, that clouded leopards will lose a majority of their habitat before we know it. Sadly, that isn’t the only threat to the clouded leopard’s existence…

These cats are hunted for their looks

Clouded leopards are constantly in danger of hunting. Their gorgeous coats, impressive teeth, and bones are very desirable in the illegal wildlife trade market. This is heartbreaking. What is even more heartbreaking is that there are countries where eating clouded leopard is seen as a delicacy, often served to wealthy tourists.

The clouded leopard is an amazing animal that shouldn’t be allowed to disappear. It is a special animal, part of a gorgeous rainforest ecosystem that must be conserved. Yes, cats have anxiety too. Although cats are known for their independence, they still do suffer from separation anxiety. This anxiety could stem from a few things.

Cats that were abandoned at young ages often struggle with separation anxiety. There are also various breeds that are extra social and feel very connected to their humans. This leaves them feeling way more lonely when their families are away for a longer period of time. This could be just a day of work or a weekend vacation.

If you do spend hours away from home often, separation anxiety may be the reason for your cat’s consistent clinginess, especially if this need for attention happens every time you come home.

Stress

A clingy cat can be a sign of stress. This stress is usually environmentally-driven. As we know, our cats are little hunters with keen survival skills. They are always hyperaware of their environment. So, when there is a change, cats get stressed. Oftentimes, the response is to get close to their human companions.

This stress can be induced by a variety of factors. The noise and vibrations of intense storms are known to stress cats out. The presence of new family members, both two-legged and four-legged, is another common stressor for cats. The foreign nature of a new person triggers a threat-response in cats, causing them to find comfort and safety by your side.

Illness

A sudden increase in clinginess from your cat may suggest that it is experiencing physical discomfort. As your cat’s human, it will look for you to comfort them through the pain they are experiencing.

Clinginess typically isn’t the only sign of cat illness. Your cat may also display other symptoms. Lethargy (extreme tiredness,) excessive vocalizations, or lack of appetite are some of the most common symptoms of pain and illness in cats. If you believe that your cat may have an underlying illness, you should make an appointment with your vet right away.

New People

Not every cat is fond of new people in their homes. Another person in the household, especially if this is a permanent addition to the household, can leave a cat very confused. They don’t exactly know why the person is there, and may even wonder if this newbie is a threat. Since you are your cat’s main companion and protector, your cat will seek refuge with you, until your cat feels comfortable enough with the new person to go back to its usual routine.

First, don’t be cold. Your cat is looking for comfort. The best thing to do is to provide your cat with scratches, rubs, and cuddles it needs. But, don’t spoil your cat. Remember, you want to help your cat feel safe enough to be back to its regular routine.

To revitalize your cat’s independence and confidence, you should slowly give your cat a little distance. Show your cat ways to find comfort without you. You can provide toys to play with. Don’t be shy to even play a game with them, one that isn’t too over-stimulating. It can be as simple as playing with string, showing your cat that it can catch the string all on its own.

If your cat is dealing with physical pain, this would not be an option. It is always best to see your veterinarian so that you can identify the issue as fast as possible.

Finally, remember that your cat needs time to feel themselves again. If clinginess seems to be an issue, your cat returning to its full, confident self will not be an overnight fix. It will take time and patience. Cats just want to feel safe, just like us!

Not the Margay, not the Ocelot – the oncilla! This wildcat calls some of the most beautiful rainforests in the world its home. And, don’t be fooled by its size – the oncilla is one fierce kitty. There’s more to this gorgeous feline than you know.

These beautiful cats only live in Central and South America

The oncilla, scientifically known as Leopardus tigrinus, is a forest-dwelling wild cat. This feline doesn’t live in just any forest. You can find oncillas specifically in rainforests across Central and South America. The kind of rainforests can range from temperate to tropical. A few groups of oncillas do also live in lowlands, like savannahs. These lands aren’t natural habitats for oncillas, though. Sadly, oncillas slowly have occupied more lowlands due to a loss of habitat.

You will not find many Oncillas in captivity

Oncillas thrive in the wild. This is why there are very few in captivity. Oncillas are known to have very high infant mortality rates when raised outside their natural habitat. With that said, oncillas (just like any wildcat) should not be kept as pets.

There’s more than just one type of Oncilla…

There are quite a few subspecies of the oncilla, or the leopardus tigrinus. This all has to do with where these cats live. As we mentioned before, oncillas live all across Central and South America. Where these cats live tells you exactly what subspecies they are.

The leopardus tigrinus oncilla is the Northern-most dwelling oncilla, found in Central America, primarily in high elevation rainforests in Costa Rica. Moving to South America, leopardus tigrinus tigrinus lives in Northern Brazil, Eastern Venezuela, and parts of Guyana. Then, to the West, the leopardus tigrinus pardinoides lives in the Western side of Venezuela, along with Ecuador and Colombia. Finally, further South, the leopardus tigrinus guttulus roams in Southern Brazil and Northern Argentina, as well as in Paraguay and Uruguay.

Males and female oncillas have their own unique names. The male oncilla is known as a tomcat, while the female is known as a queen. Now, that’s a name we’re jealous of!

This wild cat also has a couple of nicknames

When it comes to nicknames for the Oncilla, it all has to do with this feline’s striking looks. The oncilla’s gorgeous spotted coat has a similar pattern to a tiger’s, lending this little cat nicknames like ‘little tiger cat’ or ‘tigrina.’ Isn’t that just adorable?

The Oncilla is smaller than the average housecat

On average, a healthy domestic cat weighs anywhere from 8 to 10 pounds. An oncilla, on the other hand, only weighs anywhere from 3 to 6.5 pounds. What makes up for their small size is their magnificently long tail and their attitude. An oncilla’s tail can be up to 17 inches long.

Now, don’t be fooled – oncillas may be small, but their temperament can be as mighty as a lion. Oncillas are known for being pretty aggressive. So much so, they often cause a stir amongst each other. It is very normal for oncillas to fight one another. And, oncillas are not afraid of taking on a bigger animal either. There are reports that oncillas can kill animals much larger than them.

But, these cats do have a mighty appetite

Oncillas love to eat. Their diet consists of a variety of things, from lizards to squirrels. This is all due to the oncilla’s awesome climbing skills. There’s no way you can live in a rainforest without knowing how to climb (unless you have the body and jaws of a tiger.) Being skilled climbers is how oncillas are able to even eat things that fly. Yes, birds are often a perfect snack for these wildcats.

The Oncilla needs protection

There aren’t a ton of Oncillas left in the world. According to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature,) these cute wild cats are on the Red List, listed as Vulnerable.

Why? Well, there are a few reasons. First, the Oncilla’s habitat has been subject to major deforestation. All across Central and South America, rainforests have shrunk due to direct intervention by commercial and residential development companies. Even more heartbreaking, these cats are still illegally hunted for their coats. Combined with the looming consequences of pollution, oncillas are fighting every day to stay alive.

The oncilla is more than a little spotted cat. It is a mighty predator that is an important part of the rainforest ecosystems in Central and South America. Felines are very intuitive animals. This all has to do with their incredible senses. It is crazy how cats can be aware of everything around them, even in complete darkness. It’s no wonder that cats have long been associated with things of a spiritual nature. Sometimes, our cats can freak us out with their odd behavior, like staring at nothing for minutes. It begs us to wonder, are they really staring at nothing? Or, maybe, cats sense evil spirits?

It’s a question that crosses a lot of cat owners’ minds. Whether it’s from watching too many scary movies or not, it is pretty insane how our cats seem to observe things we can’t see ourselves (especially in the middle of the night…) So, let’s cut to the chase… can cats sense evil spirits?

The Spiritual History of Cats

For centuries, cats have been tied to supernatural things. These go beyond just black cats and All Hallows Eve.

Several cultures and religions considered cats as symbols of fascinating otherworldly meanings. As we know, Egyptians loved cats. They saw them as living representations of gods, particularly the almighty Sun god, Atum-Ra. Egypt is also where the belief that cats have 9 lives started. It was said that Atum-Ra birthed 8 gods. Then, he would reveal himself as the ninth God in the form of a cat when visiting the underworld.

Meanwhile, further North, the Celtics regarded cats as esteemed spiritual beings. They saw cats as guardians of the Otherworld. They believed that cats safeguarded all the Otherworld’s secrets, an intriguing way to explain the independence and mysterious nature of cats.

In the Americas, cats were associated with witchcraft. Some Native American tribes believed cats were powerful creatures who could place curses on humans. But, other tribes thought a little differently. The Zuni people saw cats are healing animals who were also very good luck. Either way, Native Americans viewed cats as animals with supernatural powers.

So Can Cats See Ghosts or Spirits?

So, we know that there was a lot of myth, folklore, and tales about cats and their mystical power in the past. But, can cats really see ghosts or evil spirits?

If you’re asking yourself this, you’re not alone. In fact, many people observe their cats doing some bizarre things that make them wonder – is there a ghost in my house? These bizarre things could be hissing aggressively at thin air, or staring at something intently with their inquisitive eyes, although there doesn’t seem to be anything there.

The Margay cat is a striking feline. Don’t mistake it for the Ocelot or Oncilla – the Margay is its very own species. It dwells among some of the world’s most beautiful forests, lurking among the trees. The elusive nature of the Margays makes it one of the most mysterious cats in the world.

This cat is extremely rare

The Margay cat isn’t one you’ll find lurking around in your backyard. Currently, no one knows precisely how many Margays there are in the world. There is a general idea, though. The ISEC (International Society of Endangered Cats) claims there might be around 1 to 5 Margays per 100 square kilometers of this cat’s habitat. That’s still quite a low number, given the range of this feline.

The Margay and Ocelot are not the same

Many often mistake the Margay for the Ocelot, probably because these cats have spots and live in very similar habitats. But, these cats are two completely unique felines.

So, how do you tell these two kitties apart? One big distinction is body shape. The Margay has a smaller body and longer, thicker tail than the Ocelot. Margays weigh typically around 8 pounds, whereas Ocelots can weigh up to 35 pounds. That means the Margay is about the size of a house cat.

Another key distinction between the two felines is their way of life. Margays are arboreal carnivores, meaning they thrive in trees. This is why you will only find Margays in dense forests. Ocelots aren’t committed to either land or trees. These cats can live in forests or grasslands.

Margay cats do not live just anywhere. You will only find this cat in the Americas, living anywhere from Mexico all the way down to Argentina.

As mentioned before, Margays primarily live in forests. These forests can be dry or tropical, as long as there are tons of trees to climb and prey to feast on. For a period of time, Margays did live as far north as Texas. Sadly, these cats are now extinct in the state.

There’s a lot of talk about how Margays are pretty solitary animals. Yet, during mating season, these cats are what some would call serial monogamists. Margays are known for having temporary partners, hunting, and sharing each others’ company for a limited period of time. This period lasts until the kittens are born when the male exits and the female becomes the sole parent.

The tree-dwelling lifestyle of the Margay gives these cats some extraordinary skills. One that is wildly impressive is that these cats can twist their ankles a full 180 degrees. This trait enables these cats to successfully climb and travel from tree to tree. Margay cats and clouded leopards are the only cats with this insane amount of ankle flexibility.

If you ever see a Margay cat, you cannot miss its tail. The Margay’s tail can be almost as long as its entire body. We aren’t joking – this cat’s tail can range from 13 to 20 inches long while its body ranges from 19 to 30 inches long.

A Margays tail isn’t just used to stand out in the jungle. Its tail works as a balancing tool. It is thick and heavy, helping this cat find balance as it climbs and navigates trees.

Protecting the Margay is a top priority

The uncertainty of the Margay’s population isn’t just because this cat lives in dense, forested areas. It is also because there are so few Margays left on Earth.

These cats need trees to survive (technically, we all need trees to survive, but that is another story…) The extreme deforestation occurring in Central and South America is the main cause of the Margay population’s depletion.

Strangely, many conservationist organizations have different interpretations of Margay’s endangerment status. No matter if these cats are considered ‘Vulnerable’ or ‘Near Threatened,’ there’s no doubt that these gorgeous felines need more support for future survival.

This doesn’t mean adopting a Margay, as these kitties as definitely wild animals. There are various organizations working to stop deforestation efforts in the Amazon and other parts of South America.

Wide-eyed and adorable, Exotic Shorthair cats are one of the most popular breeds around. Many don’t realize that this is a relative breed, with a unique history. Let’s discover all the reasons why people fall in love with Exotic kitties!

The Exotic Shorthair cat didn’t happen by pure accident. This breed was created purposefully by American Shorthair fanciers in the 1960s who thought that Shorthairs and Persians together would create a very pretty kitty.

As you could imagine American Shorthair breeders weren’t too happy about this. They were obstinate to let this new American Shorthair-Persian hybrid cat be taken seriously. But, Cat Fancier Association judge and breeder Jane Martinke had a different idea. She thought the breed had great potential and accepted it to CFA championship status in 1967.

As this new cat breed gained more popularity, the CFA limited Exotic Shorthair breeding to only American Shorthairs and Persians. Before, some breeders actually crossed Burmese and Russian Blue cats as well, so that the cats could achieve a perfectly silvery coat.

Garfield was an Exotic Shorthair cat!

Yes, the lasagna-loving cat Garfield was an Exotic Shorthair. While this cat breed was first bred to be silver-colored, the continued breeding with only Persian cats created Exotic Shorthairs all kinds of colors. This includes orange tabby, like Garfield!

The ironic part is that Garfield’s character doesn’t exactly reflect an Exotic’s personality. Garfield was known for his sarcastic and sort of selfish personality, not to mention his excessive laziness and terrible love of food. Exotic Shorthairs aren’t like that at all…

If there’s one word to describe an Exotic Shorthair, it’s loyal.

Exotic Shorthairs love their humans. They are super loyal to their owners. So much so that they adore cuddles and will even purr or lick you to show off their affection.

Exotic Shorthairs adapt to your schedule. These cats won’t pressure you- they’re usually down to do whatever you want to do! That could be playing a fun game or snuggling up and watching a movie together.

When you’re alone with your Exotic Shorthair, don’t be surprised by how much love their shower you in. But, when a new person comes around, watch as your Exotic gives them the cold shoulder. Their love is reserved for you, and only you.

What many adore about Exotics is just how chill these cats are. They don’t really put any pressure on you. Exotics just go with the flow.

Exotics are very polite kitties. They rarely meow, only gently nudging you or meowing softly when they need something. These cats also prefer calm environments and cozy places to hang out. So, always make sure there’s a special space for your Exotic on your couch.

These cats also do not need a ton of space to live a full life. They can thrive in a little apartment or a mansion. To Exotic Shorthair, there really isn’t a difference, unless you leave them alone too long. Exotics are very susceptible to separation anxiety and need consistent attention.

One upper hand of the Exotic is it is a lot lower-maintenance than its Persian parents.

Persian cats have long, delicate fur that requires daily grooming. For busy folks, that may sound like a lot. Exotic Shorthairs, on the other hand, only need to be groomed weekly. That’s because Exotics acquired a shorter coat from their Shorthair parents, which is a lot easier to take care of than a Persian’s long locks.

But, make sure to take care of your Exotic Shorthair’s face

What can cause trouble for your Exotic Shorthair is surprisingly its face (despite how cute this cat is!) This kitty inherited a flat nose from its Persian parents. This may cause breathing problems for your cat. With that said, it is super important that you monitor your cat’s diet, ensuring that your Exotic maintains a healthy weight. Cat obesity will only cause more breathing issues for your Exotic.

Flat-nosed kitties also struggle with tear drainage. This may cause your Exotic to have tear stains under their eyes, which you should gently clean often. Remember – Exotics are very sweet-tempered and usually make grooming a painless process.
