Actor Dennis Quaid Adopts Black Shelter Cat With Same Name

In life, sometimes things are just meant to be. And for one black kitty cat in Lynchburg, Virginia, it seems that fate had something special in store for him thanks to his name. Soon for him there will be no more lonely nights and cages, he will be living in the lap of luxury with his human—who happens to share the same name as him.

Dennis Quaid has been a beloved Hollywood star for decades, and aside from his A Dog’s Purpose fame, he’s a huge cat lover, too. Dennis recently launched a podcast called The Pet Show—which is described as “a podcast with a purrpose.” Along with cohost Jimmy Jellinek, Dennis uncovers pet behavior and interesting stories of the pet world. (Perhaps I should reach out!)

So, how did Dennis Quaid the cat get his name? Well, Danielle Ulmer, who serves as the Adoption Center Manager with the Lynchburg Humane Society, explains that,

“We take in about 4,000 animals a year, so we really just try to come up with creative names and just not have the same name twice. A lot of times if we watch a good movie or are super obsessed with this book or this actor or something like that, we’ll just throw the names out there just to try to get more creative.”

Handsome Dennis Quaid the cat was featured as part of News 10’s annual “Clear The Shelters” event, and his video made it to the news on August 8, 2020. Soon after, the real life Dennis Quaid caught wind of it and knew what he had to do. At first the shelter was highly skeptical, thinking perhaps it was a prank. So, actor Dennis Quaid suggested a Zoom call for them to confirm that he was in fact who he said he was and that his intentions were true.

The actor told News 10 that the decision was simple once he found out about the cat in need with the same name: “It was really off the wall,  just couldn’t resist. I had to.” Additionally, human Quaid added that, “Maybe they should start naming animals in shelters after different celebrities and see who bites.”

I’m so glad that the feline Dennis Quaid got his happy ending thanks to a celeb with the same name. Perhaps more shelters really should do this as a means to grab the attention of the public. Here’s to wishing both human Dennis and cat Dennis a long and happy life together.
